About Course

The curriculum of the Hiking Essentials is broken into 10 units, each with specific learning objectives, key topics, activities, and resources. The course is completed in a single day. It is a very practical and fast moving Course, assessment is confirmed by both practical demonstrations and online.

What Will You Learn?

  • By the end of the one day (4 hours) course on Hiking Essentials, you'll typically learn the fundamentals needed to safely and enjoyably start exploring trails. With the hands nature of this course you will gain valuable experience and confidence.

Course Content

Introduction to Hiking
Objective: What hiking is and why it’s beneficial Types of hikes (day hikes, overnight, thru-hikes) Leave No Trace principles

  • Introduction to Hiking

Planning & Preparation
Objective: How to choose a trail (difficulty, length, elevation, environment) How to read trail descriptions and maps Weather considerations Permits and regulations

Essential Gear
Objective: The Ten Essentials (navigation, sun protection, insulation, illumination, first aid, fire, repair kit/tools, nutrition, hydration, emergency shelter) Appropriate footwear and clothing (layering system) Backpacks – choosing and fitting

Navigation Basics
Objective: Reading topographic maps Understanding trail markers and signs Basic compass use Introduction to GPS and mobile apps (like AllTrails, Gaia GPS)

Safety & First Aid
Objective: Common hiking injuries and prevention (blisters, sprains, dehydration, etc.) Basic wilderness first aid Wildlife awareness and safety Emergency procedures and communication (when to call for help, using a PLB)

Physical Conditioning
Objective: Physical Conditioning Basic fitness for hiking Stretching and warm-ups Pacing and rest strategies

Nutrition & Hydration
Objective: What to eat before, during, and after a hike How much water to carry Water purification methods

Environmental Awareness
Objective: Leave No Trace (in more detail) Trail etiquette Respecting wildlife and habitats

Weather & Terrain
Objective: Recognizing weather changes Hiking in different environments (desert, forest, alpine, etc.) River crossings, sand, snow, mud, and other hazards

Group Dynamics & Solo Hiking
Objective: Hiking in groups vs. solo Communication and decision-making Responsibilities as a group leader or member
